Search Tips and Tricks
The main search bar is stationary throughout HeinOnline. With the one-box search bar, users are able to enter a term and search by full text, author, title, citation, or catalog. For example, let's enter the text "North American Free Trade" and select the Title option.
Refine the results,using the facets on the left side of the page, which include date, document type, and section type. Sort search results by relevance, volume date, or document title. Find cited-by information and access tools such as an instant PDF download on the right side of each search result. Use the icons next to the sort-by bar to modify your current search, to search within results, to toggle all matching text pages, or to turn OFF infinite scroll.
Using the Advanced Search option located under the main search bar within the U.S. Treaties and Agreements Library, users are able to search for specific Text, Title, Date, or Description and select the Document Type that is preferred. For example, let's search for CRS Reports or Hearing related to Free Trade, between the date range of 2000-2010.
Enter "Free Trade" into the Text box, select CRS Reports and Hearings from the Document Type box, and enter 2000-2010 in the date fields.
From the results page, users will notice the search term in bold. See the example below.
To find a specific treaty, users are able to utilize the built-in U.S. Treaty Index within the database. Search 25 different metadata fields, including:
- Treaty Number
- Country Name
- Short Title
- Treaty Description
- State Department Number
- Signing Dates
- Termination Dates
- Publication Citation
- And many more!
In addition, users can select to view treaties that are in force or not in force or both with the In Force Selector
Using the U.S. Treaty Index to search by treaty title
To search for a treaty title, for example "North American Free Trade Agreement" we can use either the Short Title or Treaty Description down-down box options within the U.S. Treaty Index section:

Use the U.S. Treaty Index to Search by Subject and Volume Date
To search for a treaty with a specific subject and date, for example Trade across all titles from 2005, we can use the All Subjects, TIF Subject, and Kavass Subject down-down box options within the U.S. Treaty Index section:
These 13 Results show all titles that involve Trade from 2005.
Search Tips:
- Click the agreement number to be taken to the full text of the agreement.
- Click the summer link to display the full meta-data for the treaty.
