About Current Index to Legal Periodicals

A History of the Current Index to Legal Periodicals

Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) is a publication that has been issued by the University of Washington School of Law's Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library for nearly 90 years. Maintained diligently by an experienced team of editors, the publication indexes the most recent issues of primarily American law journals by subject heading. Since the 1960s, the index has been sent to its subscribers on a weekly basis.

Though it began in the 1930s as an internal publication for the university's law school faculty, the value of CILP was soon recognized in the greater law library community. In 1958, the University of Washington began to sell its publication as an annual subscription. A decade later, CILP became a regular weekly publication on which law librarians, professors, lawyers, and other legal scholars would heavily rely.

Today, CILP has evolved into an essential current awareness tool for legal scholars. Moreover, the back issues of CILP represent a critical historical artifact that reflects the changes in legal scholarship not only over the years or months, but also down to nearly any week in question. Through CILP, members of the legal field receive timely topical access to nearly 650 legal publications organized within 104 relevant subject headings. Also included are complete tables of contents from all journals indexed, as well as Bluebook citations.

Meet the CILP Editorial Staff - A combined 20+ years' experience in legal periodical indexing!

undefinedIngrid Holmlund, Executive Editor

Ingrid Holmlund is happy to join Hein as a continuing editor of CILP. She is a graduate of Stanford University, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies. Ingrid attended law school in her home state of Washington, earning a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law. After a clerkship at the Washington State Supreme Court, she practiced law at a large Seattle firm, primarily in the areas of environmental and land use law. Later Ingrid returned to the University of Washington, attending its law librarianship program and obtaining a Master’s degree in Librarianship. She is also a member of the Washington State Bar.

Ingrid began working at the University of Washington Law School’s Gallagher Law Library as a CILP editor in 2011. She enjoys classical music, politics, and cooking. At last count, she has 165 cookbooks overflowing her kitchen bookshelves.

undefinedCindy Fester, Managing Editor

Cindy Fester’s path to the editing team of the CILP took a circuitous route. An employee of the University of Washington’s School of Law beginning in October of 2002, she worked for 13 years in a faculty support role. In 2015 Cindy was promoted to the position of editor of research publications in the UW School of Law. In 2017 she joined the Public Services team in the School of Law’s Gallagher Law Library, continuing in her editing role and was introduced to CILP as the proofreading editor. She later assumed the role she currently has, working part-time now with Hein and the indexers to produce each CILP issue.

Cindy holds degrees in Journalism and English from the University of Wyoming. During her years at the UW, she served as managing editor of the student newspaper for a term and worked four years as a student assistant at the University of Wyoming Athletic Media Relations Office. An undergraduate during the first several years of Title IX, she earned varsity letters in volleyball and softball as a walk-on.

Hein's Acquisition of CILP

The William S. Hein Company and HeinOnline were proud to acquire the Current Index to Legal Periodicals in February of 2020, and to continue the publication of this crucial resource for legal scholars. Under Hein's direction, the function and purpose of CILP remains exactly the same—to provide a weekly, subject-categorized index of the most recent law journal issues. Electronic subscribers may now download the CILP issue in various file formats directly from a database in HeinOnline, while also receiving the full text of the most recent CILP issue in an email on most Mondays of the year.

A Note About the Editors

The editorial staff (Cynthia Fester, Tania Schriwer, and Ingrid Holmlund), who have decades of combined experience editing for the University of Washington Gallagher Law Library, continue to index each issue of CILP under Hein. More than 3,000 law professors, lawyers, and law librarians review CILP before its publication each week.
