Search Tips and Tricks
The Restatement Section Locator tool can be found on the American Law Institute Library homepage.
To use this tool, choose the Restatement name from the drop-down menu and enter the section number. For this example, let’s look for Restatement, Third, Unfair Competition section 40. Find Restatement, Third, Unfair Competition from the drop-down, and enter 40 into the section box. Then, click Submit.
Users are then directed to the page on which the section begins.

Use the Advanced Search option located under the main search bar within the American Law Institute. For example, let's search for the phrase "charitable trusts" within Restatements & Principles of the Law. Add the phase in quotes using the Text field, and select Restatement & Principles of the Law from the document type. Then click the Search button.
Users can narrow down results using the facets on the left, including Date, Document Type, Section Type, and Title.
Users can now visualize the results yield of various keywords to better refine their searches. Navigate to the Advanced Search option within the American Law Institute Library database and click on the Venn Diagram Search option.
Users will be redirected to a search bar, instructions for its use, and example searches. Enter a search for multiple terms separated with the Boolean operators "AND." A Venn Diagram will appear, illustrating the various combinations of those terms and their respective results yield throughout the database. The original search combining all terms will appear by default, visually represented by the red intersection of all circles.
