Main Search Bar Tips

  • The main search bar is stationary throughout HeinOnline
  • Once inside the Complete Periodical Literature of Law Librarianship database, the search bar will search only within this database, unless the Search All Databases box is ticked
  • Need something more robust? We recommend using the custom Periodical Index by clicking the Search CPLLL tab, but you can also click Advanced Search to perform a search using custom drop-downs
  • Need a refresher on how to construct a perfect search? Click Search Help for a quick reference guide to commonly used search syntax

Using the Main Search Bar

  • For example, enter the term internet into the search bar
    • Select where you want to search for this phrase: as an Author, appearing in the Title of any document or article, as a Citation, or in our Catalog as a title. Want to see your search in any of these fields, or appearing in the full text of a document? Select Just search for

  • Use the facets on the left side of the page to narrow your results by Date, Subjects, Significance, Library Type, or Title
  • Matching results can come from the article title, author, journal title, significance, library type, subjects, publication date, or the editors' abstracts
  • Sort search results by relevance, volume date, or title
  • Use the icons next to the sort-by bar to modify your current search, to search within results, or to turn OFF infinite scroll

Using the Periodical Index

  • Use the custom Periodical Index to help maximize your research within this collection
  • Not sure where to start? Browse content by Subject Headings, Author, Article Title, Journal Title, Significance, or Library Type
  • Use the drop-downs to choose a variety of ways to search: Keywords, Article Title, Creator/Author, Subject, Journal Title, or Library Type
    • Confused by what some of these fields mean? We have a glossary elsewhere in this guide that defines these terms
    • Add another search field if three isn't enough
  • Change the Boolean operators to smarten up your search
    • Include all terms with AND
    • See results with some terms with OR
    • Exclude terms with NOT
    • Get results that show your terms within a certain proximity of each other, be it within 5, 10, or 15 words
  • Restrict results within a date range and change how results are sorted

Use the Refine Your Search options from the search results to further narrow your results. In this example, the results are narrowed by significance (Continuing Value, Historical Value, Landmark).
