Browsing the Database

Browsing the JFK Assassination Records Archive

Hein has organized and indexed the records in this archive while also devising a new way to browse the many pages available. Data visualization charts allow the user a quick and easy way to locate National Archives and Records Administration documents by Agency, Document Type, Originator, and Date

For example, starting with the first chart on the left, simply hover over each segment of the chart to learn how many documents from each agency are included. The result is also displayed as a percentage.

"Other" Fields

In the example chart, the gray portion is defined as "Other." The agencies in this slice of the pie chart are further defined in the "Agency - Other" visualization chart on the right-hand side of the page. The legend to the right of the chart lists out by name eight "Other" agencies at a time over four pages of results. Use the blue arrows beneath the list to navigate them all.

These instructions apply to the other data visualization charts as well. See the charts for Type and Originator below.

Interactive Bar Chart

Finally, view an interactive bar chart that illustrates the amount of documents published in a particular year. Hover over a data point to see the exact number of documents.
