Democracy in America

HeinOnline's interactive digital edition of the classic Tocqueville work, edited by Alan Keely, Associate Director for Collection Services at Wake Forest Law Library.

Note about the Chapter Designations

In the digital edition, the chapters of Volume I are numbered continuously (Chapter I through Chapter XVIII). But because Democracy in America has been published as two two-volume sets, one two-volume set, and in single volumes over the course of its long history, attempting to find the same chapter in different edition configurations can be challenging. Chapter numbering for Tocqueville’s first volume usually follows one of two patterns:

Pattern One: Part I (chapters I through VIII) and Part II (chapters I through X)

Pattern Two: Chapter I through Chapter XVIII

To convert between Pattern Two and Pattern One (chapter numbers IX through XVIII only), simply take the actual chapter number and subtract 8; from Pattern One to Pattern Two (chapter numbers in part II only), simply take the actual chapter number and add 8.

For example, if trying to locate the content of Chapter IX in an edition where the chapters are numbered like those in Pattern One (Chapters I through VIII and Chapters I through X), such as the Librarie de Medicis edition of 1951, take the chapter number and subtract 8.

Example: If you have Chapter 9, and want to convert this into the chapters in Parts I and II, subtract 8 from the chapter number. The result is 1, so this content corresponds with Chapter I in Part II in an edition that maintains Tocqueville's original numbering.

Similarly, to convert from Pattern One to Pattern Two, add 8 to the chapter number you have.

Example: If you have Part 2, Chapter 1 and want to convert this into continuous chapters, add 8 to the chapter number you have. The result is 9, so this content corresponds with Chapter 9 in an edition with continuous chapter numbering
