Main Search Bar Tips

The main search bar is stationary throughout HeinOnline. After entering the American Enterprise Institute Library, the Full Text search tab option on the search bar will search within only this database. Click Advanced Search to perform a search of all titles using custom drop downs unique to this collection. Need a refresher on how to construct the perfect search? Click Search Help for a quick reference guide to commonly used search syntax.

Using Advanced Search

Click Advanced Search to be taken to a page with custom facets to help maximize your research within this collection. Use the drop downs to choose a variety of ways to search; Text, Title, and Policy Area are the default suggestions, but Creator/Author is an additional option. Add another search field if three isn't enough. Select a specific title or titles in which to search or search the entire database. Restrict results within a date range and change how results are sorted.

Advanced search viewFor example, let's use Advanced Search to find publications from the American Enterprise Institute dealing with student loans. In the Text field, enter student loan*. This will search for the term student and loan separately, and the wildcard symbol will allow us to see both results with loan and loans and any other permutations of the word (loaning, loaned, etc.). Let's say we're only interested in finding titles published under the policy area Higher Education within the last ten years. Fill in the Policy Area and date range; the search yields 33 results.

About Venn Diagram Search

HeinOnline's Venn Diagram Search offers a visual representation of how search terms interact with each other to help users both refine their current search terms and become better researchers going forward.

Let's explore student loans some more with Venn Diagram Search, which can be accessed under Advanced Search. Searches are constructed by stringing together multiple terms separated by the Boolean operator "AND," with phrases grouped together in quotation marks.

In this example, let's search for "student loan" AND debt AND default to bring up 36 results in the Venn Diagram.

Venn diagram search in actionThe results displayed on the right side of the page pertain to the search as we originally constructed it (represented by the red slice in the center of the intersecting circles). If we're interested in the results in the other circles, select Clear for the ability to hover over the different segments of the diagram. Once Clear is clicked, the thirty-six results will vanish from the right side of the page. Now as users hover over the diagram they will see all possible search term combinations from our original query. In our example, we can see results for default AND debt, "student loan" AND default, "student loan" AND debt, and the terms debt, "student loan," and default individually. Click one of these highlighted circles or intersections to explore their results. For example, we can change our search to see the 253 results for debt AND default by clicking that slice of the diagram. Sort the results, save or export, turn to the specific page of a result, or start at the beginning of a given title.
